Planning a countryside wedding in Normandy: the guide

Countryside wedding at Domaine Majorelle in Normandy

A countryside wedding charms with its simplicity: a garden, greenery, open-air tables and loved ones around you. It still needs planning. Here are the steps and questions to ask to make a ceremony and reception in nature a success, in Normandy.

1. Set the date and guest count

Two parameters shape everything else: the date and the size of the group. For an outdoor wedding, May to September offers the best chance of good weather, but also the busiest weekends: book a year ahead if you can. Guest numbers determine the space needed, the caterer, the sleeping arrangements and the budget.

At Domaine Majorelle, weddings and private events are hosted by prior request, with a proposal tailored to your project. See the weddings and events page.

2. Choose a venue that is the décor

In a countryside wedding the venue is also the decoration: a large enclosed garden, trees, a terrace, a house with character. Ask yourself three questions: where will the ceremony take place, where will the tables be laid, and where do you retreat if it rains? The estate offers a large enclosed garden, a terrace and a living room with fireplace, so you can plan a sheltered plan B.

Also think about guest access, parking and neighbours, useful if you plan evening music.

3. Anticipate the weather: plan B

Normandy is beautiful but changeable. The right reflex: plan a covered space from the start for the ceremony or dinner (marquee, hall, indoors), and make it part of the budget rather than a last-minute reaction. Warn guests too (shoes suited to grass, a shawl for the evening) and keep a flexible schedule for photos.

4. A menu with local produce

The meal is the heart of the reception. The Pays de Bray offers fine produce: Neufchâtel (PDO cheese), cider, pommeau, farm products. The Route des Fromages de Normandie and the Bray Gourmand guide (both in French) list the region's producers. A Norman cheese board or a cocktail with local produce gives your reception character.

Choose a caterer who knows the area, and specify the number of guests, dietary needs and logistics (kitchen, equipment, service). Plan a cake, drinks and next-day breakfast if guests are staying on site.

5. Accommodating guests

Having close ones stay on site extends the pleasure of the party and simplifies the trip home. The Domaine Majorelle gîte sleeps up to 10 guests in 3 bedrooms: ideal for the couple, parents or witnesses. For other guests, the Forges-les-Eaux tourist office lists hotels, gîtes and campsites: see the tourist office website.

6. Imagine the day's schedule

2.30pm
Guests arrive
Cold drinks, settling in, welcome in the garden.
3.30pm
Ceremony
Civil-style or symbolic, outdoors if weather allows.
5pm
Cocktail
Local produce, soft music, group photos.
7.30pm
Dinner
Tables laid outdoors or under cover.
10pm
Evening
Music, dancing, bonfire or candles.
Next day
Brunch
For guests staying on site.

Indicative example to adapt.

7. Photos: places and moments

Late-afternoon light is ideal in Normandy. For portraits outside the estate, think of neighbouring châteaux: the château de Martainville or Vascœuil are a short drive away. Set a dedicated photo slot so you do not miss the cocktail.
