Spring in Normandy: flowering garden, cycling and markets

Flowering garden at Domaine Majorelle in spring

With the fine weather, the Norman countryside wakes up: orchards in blossom, green forests, markets regaining colour. Here are ideas for a spring stay around Forges-les-Eaux, with family or friends.

A garden that wakes up

The estate's large enclosed garden is a pleasure in spring: terrace, garden furniture, pétanque, table tennis and a private tennis court. Children and adults find plenty to do without a car. Note that the heated pool opens in May (it is open from May to September).

By bike on the Avenue Verte and local loops

Forges-les-Eaux is crossed by the Avenue Verte London-Paris, a former railway turned greenway: an easy route through the Pays de Bray. The tourist office also offers four loops from the town, from 16 to 43 km (see the cycling loops and the Avenue Verte page, in French). Check hire options with the tourist office.

Walks and forests

In spring the paths are green and flowering. The Bois de l'Épinay and the Pays de Bray walks offer loops of every length.

Markets and producers

Markets bring back their seasonal stalls. Put together a picnic or barbecue with local produce from the Bray Gourmand guide (in French), and do not miss Neufchâtel, the region's PDO cheese (Route des Fromages de Normandie).

Cultural outings

The château de Martainville (museum of Norman traditions and arts) and Vascœuil (château and gardens, art and history centre) make lovely half-day outings. For history lovers, the former spa quarter of Forges-les-Eaux can be explored on foot.

With children

The enclosed garden lets children play safely, and the gîte has children's games; pétanque, table tennis and tennis complete the picture. The gîte's landing has games and books for rainy days, and the neighbouring ponies always delight younger guests: the gîte has a view of the ponies. For outings, easy cycling loops and the La Rosière circuit (16 km) suit families.

When to come in spring

April brings the first fine days but stays cool; May and June are the most pleasant months, with the heated pool opening in May. Long weekends book early. For a group or retreat, it is also a popular season: see our retreats and group stays offer and our weddings and events page.
