A cosy winter stay in Normandy, by the fire

Garden at Domaine Majorelle in winter with a Christmas tree

Off-season, Normandy has a special charm: bare forests, morning mist, candles and a fireplace. Here is how to enjoy a winter stay at Domaine Majorelle with family or friends, and what to do around Forges-les-Eaux when it is cold.

A house made for winter

The gîte offers 110 m² over two floors, with a living area and open kitchen, a sitting area with fireplace and smart TV, three bedrooms and two shower/bath rooms. A landing with children's games and books, an enclosed garden and parking complete the picture. Details are on the Gîte page.

A useful note: the heated pool is open from May to September only. In winter the stay centres on the fireplace, the kitchen and walks.

Forest walks

Norman forests are superb in winter, when dry cold sharpens the landscape. The Bois de l'Épinay is a lovely walk a few minutes away; the walks listed by the tourist office let you adjust the length. Bring good shoes and a flask.

Christmas in Forges-les-Eaux

At year-end the town lights up. The tourist office announces each year an ice rink at the Domaine de Forges, a craft Christmas market and events. Dates vary: check the Christmas in Forges-les-Eaux page and the events calendar (in French) for your weekend.

A wellbeing and heritage break

Forges-les-Eaux is a former spa town. Its spa quarter, with its Belle Époque casino, villas and park, can be walked in dry weather, and the Forges Spa at the Domaine de Forges extends the relaxation. For a cultural outing, the château de Martainville houses a museum of Norman traditions and arts.

At the table

In winter, Norman cooking comforts: cheeses (Neufchâtel first), cider, tarts, slow-cooked dishes. Build your meals from the Pays de Bray produce in the Bray Gourmand guide (in French), and visit the Forges-les-Eaux market.

For a retreat or group stay

The estate is also a lovely address for a winter retreat: see our article on the cosy winter retreat and our retreats and group stays offer.

Travelling with children

Children love the landing with its games and books, and country walks: pack wellies and gloves. The house has a washing machine and a tumble dryer, handy for damp clothes, as well as an equipped kitchen for simple meals.

What to pack

Bed linen and towels are provided, as is cleaning, according to the gîte's Gîtes de France listing.

A family gathering at Christmas or New Year

With 10 beds across 3 bedrooms, the gîte suits family gatherings: a big table, a fireplace, a tree in December. To book direct, use the booking tool on the Gîte page; for a private event or group, see weddings and events.
