Yoga, writing, creativity, personal development: you have the programme, now you need the venue and the organisation. Here are the questions to ask, step by step, to organise a retreat in Normandy without draining your energy.
Before looking for a venue, set the basics: how many days (a two-night weekend, three days, a week)? How many participants? What rhythm (intensive practice, workshops and rest, silence)? These three answers determine the size of the house, the number of bedrooms and the space you need for practice.
A short format, Friday evening to Sunday, is the easiest to fill and organise, especially for a first retreat. It suits Normandy well: at 1h45 from Paris, the journey stays reasonable after a working week.
A retreat often works best in a place your group has to itself: no mixing with other guests, an atmosphere that builds quickly, the freedom to practise whenever suits you. At Domaine Majorelle, the gîte sleeps up to 10 guests in 3 bedrooms, with a large living room with fireplace, a terrace and an enclosed garden. The house is exclusive to your group: see the Gîte page for room details.
Always ask for the real sleeping capacity (not the number of people who “fit in the house”), and whether day participants are possible. With us, they are, on request.
Meals set the rhythm of the stay and create connection. Between cooking for yourselves and full service, there are middle options: meals prepared by a local caterer, breakfasts provided, local produce to share. It saves you time and gives your participants a Norman thread running through the stay.
The area lends itself to it. The Pays de Bray is the home of Neufchâtel, a PDO cheese with real character: the Route des Fromages de Normandie gives pointers (in French). The tourist office also publishes a guide to local producers, Bray Gourmand. Mention any dietary requirements early (vegetarian, gluten-free, allergies): it is the first thing participants check.
The phrase covers very different realities. Ask each venue what is included: bed linen and towels, cleaning, meals, providers, welcoming participants. For our retreats, the offer covers accommodation, meals and breakfasts, local partners and logistics, depending on your needs. You design and lead the programme; we take care of the rest. Details are on our retreats and group stays page.
Remember that you stay in charge of your own choices: programme, communication, registrations and your participants' pricing.
A good retreat alternates practice and pauses. Pauses are a chance to get outdoors: paths for silent walking, a garden to stretch in fine weather, a forest to unwind in. Near the estate, the Bois de l'Épinay and the walks listed by the tourist office are a few minutes away. By bike, four loops start from Forges-les-Eaux, from 16 to 43 km: see the cycling loops (in French).
The estate's heated pool is open from May to September only; the rest of the year, the fireplace takes over.
Forges-les-Eaux is a former spa town of the Pays de Bray, known for its ferruginous springs. Its former spa quarter (in French) can be explored on foot and makes a pleasant group outing between workshops. The Forges Spa at the Domaine de Forges carries on the relaxation theme. It adds to the wellbeing side of your communication, promising nothing more than a pleasant setting.
Each season has its own mood. In spring the garden blooms; summer allows outdoor practice and the pool; autumn offers colourful forests and generous tables; winter suits cosy retreats, with a log fire and a Christmas tree. See our articles on spring, autumn and the cosy winter retreat.
A retreat budget comprises accommodation, meals, the facilitator (if it is not you), any activities, communication and a safety margin. Always ask for a detailed quote and clarify what is included or not (tourist tax, linen, cleaning). With us there is no standard price: the proposal depends on length of stay, group size, season and the services chosen.
For a first experience, a small group (6 to 10 people) makes organisation and atmosphere easier. At Domaine Majorelle, sleeping capacity is 10 guests.
